چکیده

In the limit of a large mass M À 1, and on a finite interval of length 2L, an equilibrium spike solution to the classical Keller-Segel chemotaxis model with a linear chemotactic function is constructed asymptotically. By calculating an asymptotic formula for the translational eigenvalue for M À 1, it is shown that the equilibrium spike solution is unstable to translations of the spike profile. If in addition L À 1, the equilibrium spike is shown to be metastable as a result of an asymptotically exponentially small eigenvalue. For M À 1 and L À 1, an asymptotic ODE for the metastable spike motion is derived that shows that the spike drifts exponentially slowly towards one of the boundaries of the domain. For a certain reduced Keller-Segel model, corresponding to a domain of small length, a solution with a spike at each of the two boundaries is constructed. This solution is found to be metastable, and it is shown that there is an exponentially slow exchange of mass between the two spikes that occurs over very long time scales. For arbitrary initial conditions, energy methods are used to show the global existence of solutions. The relationship between this reduced Keller-Segel model and a Burgers-type equation modeling the upward propagation of a flame-front in a finite channel is emphasized. Full numerical computations are used to confirm the asymptotic results.

Basic Mechanisms Driving Complex Spike Dynamics in a Chemotaxis Model with Logistic Growth

Recently, Wang and Hillen [Chaos 17 (3) (2007) 037108–037108] introduced a modified Keller-Segel model with logistic growth that exhibits complex spatiotemporal dynamics of spikes. These dynamics are driven by merging of spikes on one hand, and spike insertion on the other. In this paper we analyse the basic mechanisms that initiate and sustain these events. We identify two distinguished regime...

Instability in a generalized Keller-Segel model.

We present a generalized Keller-Segel model where an arbitrary number of chemical compounds react, some of which are produced by a species, and one of which is a chemoattractant for the species. To investigate the stability of homogeneous stationary states of this generalized model, we consider the eigenvalues of a linearized system. We are able to reduce this infinite dimensional eigenproblem ...

A (1+2)-Dimensional Simplified Keller-Segel Model: Lie Symmetry and Exact Solutions

This research is a natural continuation of the recent paper “Exact solutions of the simplified Keller–Segel model” (Commun Nonlinear Sci Numer Simulat 2013, 18, 2960–2971). It is shown that a (1+2)-dimensional Keller–Segel type system is invariant with respect infinite-dimensional Lie algebra. All possible maximal algebras of invariance of the Neumann boundary value problems based on the Keller...

The one-dimensional Keller-Segel model with fractional diffusion of cells

We investigate the one-dimensional Keller-Segel model where the diffusion is replaced by a non-local operator, namely the fractional diffusion with exponent 0 < α ≤ 2. We prove some features related to the classical two-dimensional Keller-Segel system: blow-up may or may not occur depending on the initial data. More precisely a singularity appears in finite time when α < 1 and the initial confi...

Jeans type instability for a chemotactic model of cellular aggregation

We consider an inertial model of chemotactic aggregation generalizing the Keller-Segel model and we study the linear dynamical stability of an infinite and homogeneous distribution of cells (bacteria, amoebae, endothelial cells,...) when inertial effects are accounted for. These inertial terms model cells directional persistance. We determine the condition of instability and the growth rate of ...
